The Changes in Time
I asked my Grandmother the following questions on her feelings about the American Dream and
her own experiences and thoughts on the change of America through time.
How do you think you have fulfilled or lost your own American Dream?:
I think I had the freedom to manage my own life, and that I have pretty well accomplished my own expectations of my own American Dream.
What do you think of the direction of our country?:
I think we are going in the exact opposite direction where our country should. We are going from a country where we had a lot of personal freedom and choice to a direction where the government will have control of all aspects of our life. As soon as they have financial control they have all control.
What are the major things in the country that worry you today?:
We are losing financial freedom because of our national debt. We are losing our civic rights over the governments concern of controlling the few. They try to control everyone based on one person's actions. A major example is the gun laws. Because of the shootings they are making more restrictive gun laws on everyone. Another major point is the government is bankrupting our country.
What are some positve changes?:
We still have the constitution and our basic rights and hopefully the people in this nation will fight to uphold those rights. I hope we have enough people left that believe in taking care of themselves and responsibility. I hope we have enough people who believe in less government control.
What are some major changes you see today in people's attitude towards the government?:
When I was growing up people believed in the government and believed what the newspapers and magazines said, they believed the “written word”. So much has happened that has proved to be wrong in the government, that people don't really trust them. That's why politicians are so looked down upon. The government's approval rating is so low now, people don't believe them anymore. When I was younger and goin to school, I was taught to trust the government, and we believed that the news stories were true. In the 7th grade was the first time I had realized the "written word" wasn't always true. When I was in 7thgrade my father was manager of a resort, 27 miles from where the nuclear bomb tests were set off. I went to a school on the air force base and since we were the closest school to the bomb test, Life magazine came to do a story and take pictures of us doing the drills that schools all over the nation were doing. The drills in case of a nucleur bomb strike. When they arrived they found that we had not been doing any drills. The closest school to the nuclear tests and we hadn't been doing any drills! But rather than report the truth, they taught us how to do the drills and took pictures of us doing them. I was on the cover of life magazine cowering under my desk, with no explanation that this wasn't an ordinary occurrence in our school. I decided then that the "written word" was not necessarily always true.
