Rebecca Nurse Memorial (Ray)
Rebecca Nurse was executed on July 19th 1692, on charges of being a witch with no credible evidence brought forth. She was born in Salem, Massachusetts in February 21st 1621. She was a very religious, kind and pious woman, married to Francis Nurse, and she had several great grandchildren in the community. She was a respected individual in Salem, which brings up the question, why was she persecuted for being a witch then?
The answer is the Nurses and the Putnames had gotten in several land disputes over their properties, and the Putnames are the first to accuse her. When she is accused there is a outburst among the citizens of Salem. She was charged guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. She said the following quote “I’ve got no one to look to but God.”
What I would really like to know is why she was still executed if she was a respected elder in the community? How come it seems the Putnames are the only ones against her and they win? What could the Putnames gain from killing Rebecca?
I think its Inspiring that Rebecca, even though she would have to die by hanging, wouldn't lie and "confess" to witchcraft. She stayed true and honest to herself to the very end.
